Stories in the stones
Nan Tien Temple was built through the efforts of Fo Guang Shan and carries forward the Humanistic Buddhism advocated by Master Hsing Yun. In 1990, Wollongong City Council supported the temple project and donated the land. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in November 1992, and the temple officially opened in October 1995. The temple uses Chinese palace-style architecture and combines it with modern teaching and meditation facilities. It has gradually become an important local venue for Buddhist activities and cross-cultural exchange, and is listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register.
