Stories in the stones
The origins of Zu Lai Temple can be traced to 1992, when Master Hsing Yun traveled to São Paulo to teach the Dharma. At that time, devotee Zhang Shengkai donated a villa in Cotia, which became Fo Guang Shan’s first branch temple in South America. Venerable Juecheng remained to oversee the temple’s affairs. As the number of devotees grew, the temple purchased adjacent land and began an expansion project in 2000. The new Tang-style complex was completed and opened on October 5, 2003. Since then, it has continued to offer Buddhist education and meditation, as well as charitable activities for the local community.
