Borobudur was built during the eighth to ninth centuries, in the period of the Sailendra dynasty, and bears witness to the flourishing of Javanese Mahayana Buddhist culture. Its architecture uses square terraces, circular platforms, and a central stupa to express the Buddhist view of the cosmos, while its reliefs depict Buddhist teachings and stories. The site was later abandoned and attracted renewed attention in the nineteenth century. Multiple restoration projects took place in the twentieth century, including work from 1973 to 1983 supported by UNESCO. In 1991, Borobudur and two nearby temples were jointly inscribed on the World Heritage List.
