According to Buddhist tradition, the Buddha attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi Tree here. Ashoka built the earliest temple in the third century BCE. The surviving main structure dates to the fifth or sixth century CE and is one of India’s early brick Buddhist temples to have been preserved to the present day. The temple underwent repairs and, after a long period of decline, was extensively restored in the nineteenth century; conservation continued into the twentieth century. The temple complex was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2002 and is now also a place of pilgrimage and meditation shared by different Buddhist traditions.依佛教传统，释迦牟尼在此菩提树下成道。阿育王于公元前三世纪兴建最初的寺庙，现存主体可追溯至公元五至六世纪，是印度保存至今的早期砖砌佛寺之一。寺院历经修缮，在长期衰落后于十九世纪得到大规模修复，二十世纪仍持续保护。寺院群于二〇〇二年列入联合国教科文组织世界遗产名录，如今也是不同佛教传统共享的朝圣与禅修场所。
