Stories in the stones
Kiyomizu-dera was founded in 778. Its name comes from the pure waters of Otowa Waterfall, and it has long been a sacred site of Kannon devotion. According to legend, the monk Kenshin practiced here, and Sakanoue no Tamuramaro and his wife helped establish a temple enshrining the Eleven-Headed, Thousand-Armed Kannon. The temple buildings have been damaged by fire many times; most of the principal buildings that survive today were rebuilt in 1633. The wooden stage is supported by tall pillars on the hillside. Kiyomizu-dera originally belonged to the Hossō school and became the head temple of the Northern Hossō school in 1965, continuing the teachings of Kannon’s compassion and service to society.
