Stories in the stones
Wat Xieng Thong was built by King Setthathirath between 1559 and 1560 and was an important royal temple during the Lan Xang Kingdom. The king later moved the capital to Vientiane, but the temple continued to receive royal patronage and served monks and worshippers. The main hall’s low-sweeping, layered roof reflects the architectural style of Luang Prabang, and its rear wall is decorated with a glass mosaic depicting the Tree of Life. The temple also preserves a Reclining Buddha chapel and a royal funeral carriage hall; construction of the latter began in 1962. After undergoing multiple restorations, Wat Xieng Thong remains home to monks and novice monks.
