According to temple tradition, the Tooth Relic was brought from India to Sri Lanka in the fourth century CE. It subsequently moved with the capital and became an important symbol of royal authority. In the late sixteenth century, the King of Kandy built a temple for the relic; the early buildings were damaged in warfare and rebuilt. The surviving two-storey inner shrine was built by an eighteenth-century king and has been continually repaired since. The Octagon was built during the reign of the last King of Kandy. To this day, the Malwathu and Asgiri chapters of the sangha jointly conduct the offering ceremonies.据寺院传统，佛牙舍利于公元四世纪由印度传入斯里兰卡，随后随王都迁移，成为王权的重要象征。十六世纪末，康提国王为舍利修建寺院，早期建筑经历战乱毁坏与重建。现存两层内殿由十八世纪国王营建，后来持续修缮；八角亭建于最后一位康提国王统治时期。至今，马尔瓦塔与阿斯吉里亚两支僧团仍共同主持供奉仪式。
