Stories in the stones
Local tradition traces the origins of Shwedagon Pagoda to the Buddha’s lifetime and says that it enshrines relics of the Buddha’s hair. This is a religious tradition, not a confirmed construction date. Historical and archaeological research suggests that the original structure was built sometime between the sixth and tenth centuries CE. In the fourteenth century, King Binnya U rebuilt the pagoda; in the fifteenth century, Queen Shin Sawbu expanded it and donated gold for the stupa. After damage from earthquakes and subsequent royal restoration, the site gradually developed into the pilgrimage complex seen today, comprising the golden main stupa, shrines, and monasteries.
Visit with respect
- Dress modestly, covering your shoulders and knees. Avoid tight-fitting, sheer, or clothing with potentially offensive images or patterns.
- Visitors must enter Shwedagon Pagoda barefoot; remove your shoes and socks. The ground may become hot in warm weather, so visiting early in the morning is advisable.
- This remains a place of worship, so do not disturb people praying. If you circumambulate the stupa with devotees, follow the local clockwise tradition.
