Stories in the stones
Accounts differ on when Boudhanath Stupa was founded. Nepali sources trace its history to around the fifth century, during the Licchavi dynasty, while Tibetan accounts offer a different version. It gradually became an important Tibetan Buddhist pilgrimage center, and a community of monasteries and shops grew up around it. In 1979, the monument zone containing the stupa was included in the Kathmandu Valley World Heritage property. The 2015 earthquake damaged the spire and dome, and restoration was completed in 2016. Worshippers still circumambulate the stupa and pray there every day.
