Stories in the stones
The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple was completed in 2007 and is located on South Bridge Road in Singapore’s Chinatown. Its architecture follows the style of Chinese temples of the Tang dynasty, and its design draws on the Buddhist mandala, which symbolizes the cosmos. The temple takes its name from a relic that devotees regard as the left canine tooth of Shakyamuni Buddha. Its religious narrative is linked to the site of the Buddha’s cremation in Kushinagar, India. The relic is enshrined in a stupa made using 320 kilograms of gold. The temple houses a museum displaying Buddhist figures and relics, and its rooftop garden also has a pagoda and prayer wheels.
