Stories in the stones
Wat Pho originated as an ancient temple from the Ayutthaya period, originally called Wat Phot. In 1788, Rama I ordered its restoration and reconstruction as a royal temple near the Grand Palace. During the reign of Rama III, it was expanded on a large scale, with the addition of the Reclining Buddha Hall, scripture buildings, and teaching spaces. Inscriptions on religion, art, and traditional medicine were also created for the public to study. Today, the temple remains divided into a worship area and a residential area for monks, preserving the architecture and craft traditions associated with royal restorations.
